Two Sides

In her Two Sides series, Youjung Choi explores the contrasting qualities of transparency and opacity in glass. Each vase is formed with layers of clear glass, glass fibers, and opaque colored glass, then carefully carved line by line at varying depths.

As portions of the outer layer are removed, glimpses of the transparent glass and delicate glass fibers beneath begin to emerge. The resulting surface reveals a rich interplay of texture, light, and transparency, while the interior offers another view of the intricate patterns formed by the glass fibers.
